Erick Rudolph, Steve Shultz and Scott Bennett Are Sunday Fall Brawl Winners at Shangri-La II

By Carol Houssock

(Tioga Center, NY)   Shangri-la II Motor Speedway closed out the 2013 season with a trio of Sunday races that left many with race stories they’ll exchange over the winter months.  Mother Nature set the stage with beautiful weather, race teams and fans gathered, and day 2 of the Fall Brawl was on.  When it was over the hardware went home with Erick Rudolph (ROC Modified), Steve Shultz (Pudgies Pizza Street Stock) and Scott Bennett (IMCA Modified).

Ransomville’s Erick Rudolph did something no one else had accomplished in 2013 – he passed Matt Hirschman for a win.  Coming in to the ROC Modified Tour finale at Shangri-la II Motor Speedway, Hirschman had claimed all but one race.  Mike Leaty was the only other winner on the tour.  Hirschman’s consistency had already earned him the 2013 championship, but he wanted a Shangri-la sweep.  He had victory on his mind.  Rudolph’s team had that same vision.  And, on this day, their vision became reality when Erick parked Ed McGuire’s #51 in victory lane. Bobby Holmes, Billy Putney and Daren Scherer won the 3 qualifying events, whose top 4 finishers drew for starting positions 1-12.  Chris Whitenight drew the pole position while Matt Hirschman drew #12, something he said he always does. IMG 5501

Tony Hanbury, Jake Wylie, Dave Russell, Scott Shafer Win Shang 2’s Saturday Night Fall Brawl Races

By Carol Houssock

(Tioga Center, NY)      Day One of Shangri-la 2 Motor Speedway’s annual Fall Brawl went off without a hitch under clear skies, unlike the rainy Saturday one year ago. Trophies went home with Tony Hanbury (Sportsman Modified), Jake Wylie (Big 10 Super Stock), Dave Russell (Late Model), and Scott Shafer (4 Cylinder). Mike Ramos left with the inaugural Big 10 Championship in a closely contested battle with Lee Sharpsteen for that honor.

Tony Hanbury drove what he described as the best handling car he’d ever driven at Shangri-la 2. The car is owned by Dan Kurzejewski, is set up by Zane Zeiner, is powered by a Morgantini engine, and is wrenched by Tommy Gush. That proved to be an insurmountable combination Saturday night in the 60-lap Sportsman Modified feature.

Jimmy Zacharias, Hanbury and John Wilber got things rolling by winning their respective heat races. Luck of the draw put Zacharias on the pole for the feature and Tom Shiner alongside for the start of the 60-lap race. The opening lap, good for Jimmy Z, was race-ending for his brother TJ Zacharias, however. He bobbled coming off turn 2, tried to correct it, but both he and Tommy Rought slid up into the outside wall and both were done. When the green came back out Tyler Rypkema quicklygot around Shiner and ran with Zacharias. Hanbury and John Wilber, who had started 8th, were on the move and running 3rd and 4th. Both Rypkema and Hanbury made their biggest moves on lap 12, when Rypkema took over the lead and Hanbury then passed Zacharias for 2nd.IMG 4914
