Two Weeks After Crash, Storace In Shangri-La II Modified Victory Lane; Hanbury Continues Streak; Lamoreaux, G. Sharpsteen, Alcaro Score
Two weeks ago to the day, Jim Storace left Shangri-La II Motor Speedway in an ambulance, headed for x-rays of a suspected broken shoulder that turned out negative. This Sunday the ride back to his New Hampshire home was much more pleasant for the Rome, N.Y, native, as he carried a big trophy along for the ride.
Storace, a one-time winner at the Concrete Castle in 2009, used a trip to the rear of the field after involvement in an early incident as motivation. He scrambled back into the lead after 13 of the 35 circuits and checked out, but he soon had company. Dean Rypkema, the owner of Tony Hanbury's unbeaten Sportsman Modified, decided he wanted to experience victory lane as a driver too. The Owego contractor took second place, closed on Storace, and arrived at the leader's back bumper with five laps to go, Tasting a sweet victory, Storace never wavered and the pair who started on the second row crossed the line a car length apart.
Jimmy Zacharias was third, John Markovic fourth, Chris Zacharias fifth, and Brian Defebo sixth. Remarkably, all the top six except Rypkema led the race at one time or another. Chris Ostrowsky and Dave Silvernail posted their best finishes in seventh and eighth, with Ken Canestrari and Matt Clemens completing the top ten.
The ASA Late Model feature saw Jim Lamoreaux end Travis Fisher's two-race winning streak while giving the new, stock-appearing Camaro body its first win. The defending track champion took over the lead when pole starter Jerry Dineen pitted on lap 8. Fisher rode a roller-coaster during the 30 laps, dropping back as far as fourth but rallying to challenge Lamoreaux on the final circuit. Unfortunately he lost the handle, spun in turn 3, and wound up fifth behind Lamoreaux, Joe Brown, Scott Nurmi, and Dan Bellinger.
Tony Hanbury kept his clean slate in the Sportsman Modified 25-lapper, which required four attempts to get a lap in the books due to a pair of false starts and a car losing power in the middle of the field. Advancing from his seventh starting position, Hanbury passed Russ Borwn for the lead on the second lap and never backed off the throttle. Rick Zacharias, J.R. Kent, Jimmy Zacharias, and Brown rounded out the top five.
The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw a battle between Lee Sharpsteen, who took the lead from Jim Potrzebowski on lap 6, and Chad McDonald, who was looking for three in a row. McDonald caught L. Sharpsteen half a lap from the white flag, contact was made, and Sharpsteen spun. McDonald was sent to the rear as well, giving the lead to Gil Sharpsteen with one lap to go. He held on despite Lee's frantic last lap charge that netted a Sharpsteen one-two. Billy Coyle, Scott Reagan, and Cricket Clonch were next to the flag.
INEX Legends races at Shangri-Las II usually turn into shootouts between Mike Alcaro and Daren Scherer. This 15-lap feature was no exception as the third and final lead change with three laps to go put Alcaro in front for this third win in four appearances. Scherer was second followed by Chris Young, Richie Vanderpool, and Matt Price.
