Jimmy Zacharias Scores A Weekend Double; Nurmi, Tarbox, Alcaro Are Winners As Shangri-La II Wraps Up Its Great American Classic Sunday

lm_17_br_37_jl_4702Jimmy Zacharias won Sunday's Sportsman Modified feature at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway to complete an open-wheel sweep of the Concrete Castle's Great American Classic weekend. On Saturday the third generation racer from Candor, N.Y. won the tour-type Modified main event.

Starting sixth, J. Zacharias needed only one lap to take the lead. He held off J.R. Kent for the remainder of the 25 laps to win his second Sportsman main event of the season. Behind Zacharias and Kent, Russ Brown, Tom Shiner, and T.J. Zacharias completed the top five. It was the best career finish at Shangri-La II for T.J. Zacharias, who also scored his first heat win.

Scott Nurmi came out on top in another tight battle with Travis Fisher to claim the ASA Late Model 30-lap headline. A last lap melee scrambled the order, both on the track and on the scoresheet after Jim Lamoreaux was handed a penalty for rough driving. Austin Kochenash, a 14-year-old invader from the Pennsylvania coal country, was credited with third in his Shangri-II debut. Dr. Dave Rigan was fourth and last week's winner Jerry Dineen fifth.

Derrick Tarbox, a Street Stock campaigner in 2009 who has sat out most of the 2010 season, came back to win the first Super Stock event at Shangri-La II over a slim field. Chip Wannamaker and Ron Babula trailed. Mike Alcaro made it two wins in 2010 and 4-for-5 in the INEX Legends over a two-year period, topping Long Islander Chris Young and Richie Vanderpool.
