Jimmy Zacharias Guarantees Sportsman Modified Start at 61st RoC
Shangri-La II Motorspeedway, the ASA member track in Tioga Center New York, held a special Thursday night show on June 16th. Hoosier Tire East and French's Auto Parts presented the track's first ever mid-week show which featured guaranteed starting spots in the 61st running of the Sunoco Race of Champions at the Oswego Speedway on July 22-24, 2011. Along with a guaranteed start in the RoC features, the winners also received a set of 4 Hoosier Tires from French's Auto Parts.
Threatening skies greeted fans and competitors, but the team assembled by track owner, George Swansborough pushed forward with the full intent to complete their second program of 2011. Twelve Sportsman Modifieds and sixteen Street Stocks pulled into the pits ready for action. The first Shangri-La II truck of the season also towed up the mountain. A pre-race drivers meeting was held to decide on how many laps to run and still have a competitive race. It was decided to run the Sportsman 40 laps and Street Stocks 50 laps. Two Sportsman competitors, Rusty Smith and Scott Adams, had mechanical problems during warm-ups, and would retire for the evening.
The heat racing was completed quickly, and the weather system looked to be rapidly moving in. A quick driver re-draw was completed and the Sportsman were called to the line. At the drop of the green flag, T-J Zacharias and Bryan Sherwood led the field to turn one. Zacharias, fresh off his first ever Sportsman race just four days before, took the lead in turn one. He pulled away from Sherwood who was being followed by Andy Jankowiak. The driver from North Tonawanda, NY was competing at the track for the first time, and quickly found the speed he needed to be a contender. While this top three moved away from the pack, Tony Hanbury and Jimmy Zacharias began their march toward the front. The two moved past Jankowiak and Dan Kurzejewski by lap seven, and Hanbury took over the lead on lap nine. Sherwood fell from his outside starting spot to eighth position. Caution on lap eleven for the spinning Paul Johnson brought the field under the yellow flag. While under caution, rain began falling, to the point the cars were brought down pit road. A brief rain delay and quick track drying by the safety crew allowed the racers to resume their contest. On the restart, Jimmy Zacharias powered around the outside of Hanbury to take the top spot. Jimmy Z pulled away from Hanbury to a half straightaway lead as Hanbury felt the pressure by Jankowiak, Kurzejewski and John Wilbur. Caution fell for the second time for a spinning T-J Zacharias in turn two, erasing his brother's lead. Jimmy Zacharias held off the challenge from Hanbury for the lead on the restart, but the field was slowed for the third and final time as the rains came and did not stop for several hours. Jimmy Zacharias was declared the winner as more than half of the feature had been completed prior to the rain. Zacharias was awarded the guaranteed starting spot for the Sportsman race at the Race of Champions. The Sportsman race is scheduled to be run on Sunday July 24th. The heats were won by Dan Kurzejewski and T-J Zacharias.
The StreetStock feature was postponed due to the rains. Track management is looking for a date to run the 50 lap event. Cricket Clonch and Gil Sharpsteen drew the front row for the Street Stock feature. The Street Stock race at the Race of Champions is also scheduled to run on Sunday July 24th. The Street Stock heats were won by Billy Coyle and Lee Sharpsteen.
After Hours Tires sponsored the Kids Club activity on Thursday night. The Kids Club placed brightly colored buckets at the concession areas to collect donations toward the upcoming "Penny Drop" coming in August.
Racing returns to the "Concrete Castle", Shangri-La II Motorspeedway on Saturday June 25th with a full program on Crazy George's Concrete Craziness night featuring "Cone" races in all divisions. S&W Awards will sponsor the Kids Club on Saturday night.
