(Tioga Center, NY) For the second time in the 2013 racing season, foul weather has forced the cancellation of the racing program at the ASA Member Shangri-La II Motorspeedway. “We have really had a lot of severe storms park themselves right over the speedway the past few days” said track event coordinator, Amy Culver. “Sitting up as high as we do, right on top of the mountain, the rain intensity and wind is just incredible. We had ponds and mini lakes in our infield and our parking areas. We really had no choice but to cancel this week”.The racing action has heated up on the track, just as much as the temperatures of summer. The Pudgies Pizza Street Stocks continue to have fast cars, close competition and a revolving door on who will be leading the points. Defending track champion, Jeff Goodwin reclaimed the top spot from Chris Zacharias on June 15th , but by only eight points. Both drivers have two wins apiece. Early season points leader, Charlie Sharpsteen remains strong in the third position, twenty eight points out of the lead. Jake Snell and Jason Duke, Sr. complete the top five in points respectively, the highest they have either been in points at Shangri-La II. Tyler Rypkema has had the hot foot in the Sportsman division winning the previous two events, however the teen driver from Owego trails third generation Candor, NY driver, T.J. Zacharias by one point entering Saturday’s action. Third place driver, Paul Johnson, fourth place driver Mikayla Rypkema and the rookie in fifth place, Randy Brokaw are all at the highest spot in the points they have ever been at The Concrete Castle. Gene Purvis is on a roll in the Four Cylinder Stocks, having won all five features and all of his heat races this season. Young driver, Nick Morich is definitely learning from one of the best in the division as the rookie sits second in the points.
The racing action in 2013 is definitely intense and totally unpredictable. Racing returns on Thursday July 4th as the track welcomes the NYS Big 10 Super Stock Series for a 40-lap feature event. The Sportsman Modifieds were added to the card for a Double Point 25-lap feature, and fans will again enjoy taking a step back in time with the Atlantic Coast Older Timers in action. Skyview Drags will also be running, with the Jet Jam and Monster Truck Show at the adjacent facility. One admission price gives access to both tracks. Pit Gates open at 4:30 pm, Grandstand Gate opens and Practice begins at 5:30 pm with racing beginning at 7:00 pm. Remember to bring back your wristbands from the last race for $2.00 off of Grandstand admission. Show your wristbands at Pudgie’s Pizza in Binghamton or Waverly and receive a discount on your food purchase. The regular weekly Saturday night racing program will return on Saturday July 13th as the speedway hosts the Shirley Zacharias Memorial race. This is a non-points, open show for the Sportsman, Pudgies Pizza Street Stocks and the Four Cylinder Stocks honoring the memory of racing family matriarch Shirley Zacharias who passed away in January. The Mid-State Vintage Stock Car Club will make their annual appearance at the speedway. There is a lot of bonus money on the line with every car in the feature eligible in collecting bonus cash, along with special giveaway’s. There is always plenty of free camping at Shangri-La II Motorspeedway. Youth under the age of 16 are admitted free.
