7/12/09 - John Markovic Prevails in the Mighty Modifieds

John Markovic of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania picked up his first win the season in the Mighty Modified division on Sunday, July 12th at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway. Joining him in the winner circle were Ben Reynolds (ASA Late Models), Jimmy Zacharias (Sportsman Modifieds) and Chad McDonald (Street Stocks).

The Mighty Modifieds had a 50 lap feature event. Rick Zacharias and Danielle Buchek led the field to the green flag. Rick Zacharias led the opening laps with Jimmy Zacharias following close behind. "Pistol" Pete Brittain who was heading towards the front, spun on the back straight and brought out the first caution flag of the afternoon on lap 6. When the field went back to green, it was Rick and Jimmy Zacharias at it again for top position. Brittain was back to the top 5 by lap 10 and coming on strong. The Zacharias's, Daren Scherer, John Markovic and Brittain made up the top 5 at the halfway point of the 50 lap event and all continued to have a close battle. Jimmy Zacharias dove to the inside of Rick Zacharias on lap 27 to take the top position away. Brittain went to the outside of Rick Zacharias, Scherer and Markovic to move into the 2nd position on lap 30 and began to close in on the race leader. On lap 33, Brittain had caught the race leader started to bump him in turns 1 and 2 letting know he was close. A spin by Rick Zachairas off turn 2 brought the yellow out on lap 34 which set up an exciting double file restart with less than 20 laps to go. Jimmy Zacharias and Brittain took the field back to green and 3rd place runner John Markovic was right in on the action as well. The drivers went 3 wide into turn 3 which suffled Brittain back to 4th with 10 laps to go. Markovic opened up a 2 car length advantage as Brittain battled with Rick and Jimmy Zacharias.Brittian cleared Jimmy on lap 42 and worked hard on Rick for the 2nd position. As Markovic took the field under the white flag, Brittain and Rick Zacharias got together on front straight and went hard into the wall which forced officials to red flag the race. Zacharias exited the car under his own power which indicated he was okay and Brittain made the trip back to the pits on the tow truck. This accident set up a green, white, checkered finish for Markovic who would hold on for the win over Jimmy Zacharias and Chris Zacharias who completed the top 3.

Scott Nurmi and Travis Fisher led the field to the green in the 25 lap feature for the ASA Late Models. Fisher jumped out to the early lead with Ben Reynolds, who cleared Nurmi on lap 4 in hot pursuit. Fisher and Reynolds battled nose to tail until Fisher hit the wall off turn 2 which allowed Reynolds, Jim Lamoreaux and Scott Nurmi to go by on the back straight. Reynolds opened up a half car length advantage over Lamoreaux who picked up ground in turns 3 and 4. Lamoreaux got a run on Reynolds and tried to pass him on the inside but went below the yellow line causing him to be penalized 2 positions in the end. Reynolds held on to win the caution free event over Scott Nurmi, Travis Fisher, Jim Lamoreaux and Joe Berretta. Travis Fisher beat Scott Nurmi in a 3 lap Dash for Cash with the winner pocketing $100 and $50 being donated to the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers.

The 40 lap Sportsman Modified feature event had Lee Sharpsteen and Paul Johnson on the front row. Sharpsteen lead the opening laps but by lap 5 had Jimmy Zacharias on the outside looking for the top spot. Jimmy Zacharias and Rick Zacharias cleared Sharpsteen on lap 15 and started to pull away from the field. Jimmy Zacharias opened up a 2 car length advantage over Rick Zacharias and that was all she wrote as Zacharias claimed his first Sportsman Modified win at Shangri-La II. Rick Zacharias was 2nd with Lee Sharpsteen, John Markovic and Kreig Heroth completing the top 5.

Chad McDonald led all 20 laps in the caution free Street Stock feature event after starting on the outside pole. McDonald jumped to the lead on lap one and opened up a huge margin over Frank Chapman who finished 2nd and AJay Potrzebowski finished 3rd. Terry Potrzebowski and Derrick Tarbox had a 3 lap Dash for Cash with Potrzebowski scoring the win and pocketing part of the winnings and donating part to the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers.
