10/3/09 - Shangri-La II Hardware to Winners, Scherer, Nichols and Alcaro; Champions, R. Zacharias and McDonald

Shangri-La II Motor Speedway kicked off a weekend full of racing with day one of the Fall Brawl on Saturday, October 3rd. Winners included Daren Scherer (Sportsman Modifieds), Mike Alcaro (INEX Legends) and Mike Nichols (Super Stocks). Rick Zacharias became the first ever Sportsman Modified Championship and Chad McDonald claimed the first ever Street Stock Championship.

10-3smodwinnerRuss Brown and Wilbur Hebing brought the Sportsman Modifieds to the green flag for the 75-lap feature event. Hebing jumped out to the early off turn one but faded quickly as Daren Scherer and Brown cleared him coming off turn 4. Jimmy Zacharias moved into the 3rd position clearing Hebing on lap 5. Brown continued to lead until he slipped up coming off turn 4 and Scherer grabbed the top spot on lap 7. Scherer opened up half straight away lead but the battle for second raged on between J. Zacharias and Tony Hanbury. The first caution came out on lap 25 when Zack Curren and Charlie Sharpsteen spun in turn 3. Scherer and J. Zacharias took the field back green. Scherer powered out front and Hanbury cleared J. Zacharias in turn 2 for the 2nd spot. J. Zacharias suffered a mechanical problem on lap 32 bringing the yellow out for the second time. As the field completed halfway, Scherer was the leader but Hanbury was closing the gap quick. With 25 laps remaining the top 5 was Scherer, Hanbury, Tim Gullo, Rick Zacharias and Hebing. Tim Gullo powered to the inside and took 2nd from Hanbury on lap 54 but Hanbury regained the spot on lap 56. Hanbury continued to close the gap between himself and leader Scherer and made several attempts to pass him on the inside but Scherer shut the door. The top 3 ran nose to tail with 5 laps remaining but Scherer held on to score his first ever win at the concrete castle. Hanbury, Gullo, R. Zacharias and Hebing completed the top 5. R. Zacharias and J. Zacharias won the 8-lap heat races.

RJ Zacharias and Mike Nichols led the Super Stocks to the green for their 35-lap feature event. Zacharias powered to the lead early and the rest of the field sorted itself out. Daugherty took the 2nd spot and Nichols fell to 3rd. The caution came out on lap 6 when Lee Sharpsteen spun in turn 1.  Zacharias and Daugherty took the field back green. Nichols dived to the inside of Daugherty in turn 1 to steal the 2nd spot. Zacharias and Nichols battled side by side for multiple laps before Nichols completed the pass for the lead.  AJay Potrzebowski brought out the caution on lap 11 when he suffered a mechanical issue. Nichols and Zacharias led the field back to green. Nichols opened up a small gap between him and second place until the caution flew on lap 17 for a spin by Sharpsteen in turn 2. With the field bunched together, Nichols and Zacharias took it green again. Nichols went to the lead; Daugherty completed the pass on Zacharias for the 2nd position in turn 3. Frank Chapman, Jr. taped Zacharias on the back-stretch to move in to the 3rd spot. With 10 laps remaining, Nichols led Daugherty, Zacharias, Tarbox and Sharpsteen. Chad McDonald moved into the top 5 on lap 28 when he completed the pass on Tarbox. Nichols would go on and score the win and following post race penalties, Chad McDonald finished 2nd and locked up the Street Stock championship. RJ Zacharias, Derrick Tarbox and Chris Daugherty rounded out the top 5. Heat Races went to Mike Nichols and RJ Zacharias.

Mike Alcaro is undefeated in the INEX Legends division at Shangri-La II. Alcaro started in the 6th position and picked up the win after completing a pass on Daren Scherer. Kevin Nowak finished 2nd, Scherer finished 3rd, Tony Hanbury finished 4th and Mark Tischler completed the top 5. Scherer and Alcaro won the 8 lap qualifying heat races.

Rick Zacharias entered the afternoon with a 25 point lead over Jimmy Zacharias in the Sportsman Modified division. Jimmy Zacharias suffered a mechanical problem on the 11th lap of the 75-lap feature event which allowed Rick Zacharias to make history and become the first ever Sportsman Modified Track Champion.

Chad McDonald entered the afternoon with a 1 point lead over AJay Potrzebowski in the Street Stock division. This was the closest championship battle and everyone knew it was going to come down the wire. AJay Potrzebowski suffered a mechanical problem on lap 11 which was all McDonald needed to cement his name in history as the first ever Shangri-La II Street Stock champion.
