• They say the best way to get in racing shape is to race. Jim Storace is proving that as he comes back from his hard crash in the Race of Champions at Shangri-La II on May 16. Five days after the accident he raced with the RoC at Albany-Saratoga on Friday and took seventh at Shangri-La II on Saturday. Over Memorial Day he scored a top ten at Oswego on Saturday and then won at the Concrete Castle on Sunday. It was his second career win at Shangri-La II.

• Owego's Dean Rypkema repeated his second place finish from the previous Modified feature at his home track, but this was a whole different race. In the May 22 feature event he was a distant runner-up to long-gone winner Rick Zacharias. This time he passed several contenders to reach second, then closed the distance to Storace but could not find a way around him.

• The five leaders of Sunday's 35-lapper set a new Shangri-La II record, and there were four lead changes in the first 13 laps. The second groove was fast all day.

• Jim Lamoreaux dialed-in the handling of his new Camaro and rode it all the way to victory lane. Hopefully his success will convince other teams to try the new body style and help bring new excitement to the growing ASA Late Model class.

Not many drivers race in three top-line classes during a season. Even fewer attempt to race in all three on the same race program. That was the task Jimmy Zacharias set for himself in last Saturday's "Concrete Kicks Asphalt" event at Shangri-La II. He did it with impressive results, leading two of his three features and recording two heats wins. His feature logbook showed a second, a third, and one DNF.

Jimmy has been a two-class performer since the Concrete Castle opened last July, driving his father Terry's equipment. In 2009, he was second to uncle Rick Zacharias in the Sportsman points and tied Rick for second in the Modifieds. A couple of weeks ago the Zacharias garage opened its doors to a pair of ASA Late Models purchased from Roland Teed. Both Jimmy and uncle Chris were fast the first time out on Race of Champions day, with Jimmy leading until fuel starvation sent him to the pits. Here' a quick look at Jimmy's long day at the office last Saturday.

Sportsman- Heat win, led laps 4-17 in the feature, finished second to Tony Hanbury.

Late Model- Led laps 12-18, pitted with smoke from under the car.

Modified- After a practice incident with his intended ride, he switched to the gold No. 71 "Mr. Jim  Tribute Car" painted in his grandfather's colors, won his heat, and finished a charging third in the main event.

It's safe to say no one has ever won three features on the same day at either Shangri-La track. That milestone might not be far away.

Officials of Shangri-La II Motor Speedway have announced that the Memorial Day Madness event next weekend has been consolidated into a one-day, five-class program on Sunday, May 30. Originally a two-day event was envisioned at the ASA Member Track, but the heavy racing schedule around the region on the first holiday weekend of the season meant the change was in the interest of all parties.

"We've all had our share of weather issues in May, and Shangri-La II has been more fortunate than most tracks," said track manager Amy Stilson. " We owe it to our fans, our race teams, and our sponsors to present the best possible product, and we saw that a Sunday-only event was the best way to achieve that," she added.
