“Shangri-la II Falls to Mother Nature…Again”

(Tioga Center, NY)      Heavy rains soaked the grounds on Friday at Shangri-la II Motor Speedway. Overnight rain and more thunderstorms predicted for Saturday afternoon into the evening have forced track management to cancel the Mid-Season Championship program scheduled for June 29th.

Race fans and teams are reminded that the next event on the schedule is Celebrate our Independence Night, this Thursday, July 4th. Shangri-la II welcomes the NYS Big 10 Super Stock Series for a 40-lap feature event. The Sportsman Modifieds were added to the card for a 25-lap feature, and fans will again enjoy taking a step back in time with the Atlantic Coast Older Timers in action. Skyview Drags will also be running, with the Jet Jam and Monster Truck Show at the adjacent facility.

Pits open at Shangri-la II at 4:30 PM on Thursday, with grandstand gates opening and hot laps getting underway at 5:30 PM. The first heat race hits the track at 7 PM.

For Immediate Release

Racing returns to the concrete high banks of Shangri-La II Motorspeedway this Saturday night for the Mid-Season Championships. Sportsman, Pudgies Pizza Street Stocks and Four Cylinder Stocks will all be in action. The planned “Family Fun Night” activities have unfortunately been postponed for this week. The rescheduled date for Family Fun Night will be released in the near future.

The racing action has heated up on the track, just as much as the temperatures of summer. The Pudgies Pizza Street Stocks continue to have fast cars, close competition and a revolving door on who will be leading the points. Defending track champion, Jeff Goodwin reclaimed the top spot from Chris Zacharias on June 15th , but by only eight points. Both drivers have two wins apiece. Early season points leader, Charlie Sharpsteen remains strong in the third position, twenty eight points out of the lead. Jake Snell and Jason Duke, Sr. complete the top five in points respectively, the highest they have either been in points at Shangri-La II. Tyler Rypkema has had the hot foot in the Sportsman division winning the previous two events, however the teen driver from Owego trails third generation Candor, NY driver, T.J. Zacharias by one point entering Saturday’s action. Third place driver, Paul Johnson, fourth place driver Mikayla Rypkema and the rookie in fifth place, Randy Brokaw are all at the highest spot in the points they have ever been at The Concrete Castle. Gene Purvis is on a roll in the Four Cylinder Stocks, having won all five features and all of his heat races this season. Young driver, Nick Morich is definitely learning from one of the best in the division as the rookie sits second in the points.

The racing action in 2013 is definitely intense and totally unpredictable. Pit Gates open at 4:30 pm, Grandstand Gate opens and Practice begins at 5:30 pm with racing beginning at 7:00 pm. Remember to bring back your wristbands from last week for $2.00 off of Grandstand admission. Show your wristbands at Pudgie’s Pizza in Binghamton or Waverly and receive a discount on your food purchase. There is always plenty of free camping at Shangri-La II Motorspeedway.

Al 2

Sometime fate brings people together by Carol Houssock

(Waverly, NY)

Two years ago longtime motorsports announcer and journalist, Al Robinson, suffered a massive stroke.  Since May of 2011 he was been residing in a Tioga County, NY nursing home, but proving every day that the human spirit can work wonders in one’s recovery.  Al has come a long way. And his hopes of a return to his own home are more of reality, thanks to some great friends….and a bunch of people he doesn’t know.

Case managers at the nursing home conducted a home visit and developed a list of modifications that would have to be completed at his home before he could safely return there.  Al’s longtime friend and fellow motorsports veteran, Jim Burleigh, installed grab bars and made many other required changes.

Carol Houssock, who has been filling in for Robinson as co-announcer at Shangri-la II Motor Speedway, is also the Director of the Chemung Volunteer Action Corps.  When she and Burleigh spoke recently about  Al and his possible return home, he told her there were a couple major items still on the “to do” list and beyond his capability. One of those would have to be done by a plumber while the other was the construction of a ramp at Al’s house.

SL2 mothers day madness resizeThe season opener will be held the next day, Sunday May 12 and is titled Mother’s Day Madness. The Madness being announced is HALF-OFF GRANDSTAND ADMISSION FOR EVERYONE attending the first event of the season. The drivers will be competing for Double Points in all four divisions. “We’re very excited to get the new season underway” says track owner/promoter George Swansbrough. “We have built Shangri-La II to be a family oriented track which has great competition for all to enjoy. What better way for families to shake off the cabin fever of winter than coming out with Mom on her special day.” The discounts do not stop at the grandstand gate. Each wristband is good for $ 2.00 off Grandstand Admission for the Saturday May 25th race as well as discounted food purchases at Pudgies Pizza Restaurants.

Jessica Dunham is looking for sponsors for the Shangri-La II Kids Club. Jessica and her group create a lot of fun and allow the kids to use their imagination during the intermissions at the track. The sponsors will be announced throughout the night at the track. It is a great way to promote your business or race team while giving back to the youngsters and helping create the next generation of race fans and perhaps drivers.

open practiceThe first of three early season practice days was completed on Saturday at the ASA Member Shangri-La II Motorspeedway with several teams taking the opportunity to get out on track and shake down their cars. One team has to be particularly grateful they were there, and that would be the Pudgies Pizza Street Stock Team of Bill Frisbee, Jr. In what ended up being his last run of the afternoon, the right front brake caliper seized causing significant damage to the suspension. Fortunately, everyone kept their cars on the track, and off of the outside concrete wall. The second practice session of the season will be held on Saturday May 11. The gates will open at 3:00 pm with practice beginning at 4:00 and lasting until dark.
