It's back to basics for Shangri-La II Motor Speedway in 2011 as the Concrete Castle's weekly Saturday night shows will feature the Sportsman Modifieds and ASA Late Models as co-feature divisions.

Anticipated growth in the Street Stock division will make Saturday night at Shangri-La II closely resemble the best days of the track after which it is named. In the mid-1970's, one premier open wheel class, one premier full-body class, and the street stocks delighted packed houses every weekend at the original Shangri-La.

"We've looked closely at the direction paved track racing is taking all around us," said track manager Amy Stilson. "Modifieds have become a class for big events, and we will give them that showcase at our two Race of Champions Series events and at the Fall Brawl in October. With three touring series in the northeast, there are plenty of opportunities for our modified competitors to race.

"We need to present a more cost-effective show every week for the track, the racers, and the fans. The other paved tracks in New York have made that decision, and so have premier speedways like Stafford and Thompson in Connecticut and Wall Stadium in New Jersey," Stilson continued. "Already many of our regulars compete in both divisions, including 2010's double track champion Jimmy Zacharias, so the fans will see their favorites in closer competition against a bigger field of cars under the new format."

"Finally, we will have more resources to help grow the ASA Late Model class, which is a personal project of track owner George Swansbrough," Stilson concluded.

During the 2011 season, Shangri-La II plans to introduce an economical four-cylinder sport truck class to attract new competitors to the Concrete Castle. Plans are still in the formative stages, but intentions are to have the class up and running as soon as possible.

The first of the Race of Champions events, the Return of the ROC'n Concrete Rumble, will open the third season of Shangri-La II Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon, May 15. In addition to the 100-lap modified showdown, the other track classes will be in action and the $1,000 50/50 jackpot that was unclaimed at last year's Race of Champions event will form the seed money for the new 50/50.

2011season_pic1The time for winter racing shows is over. The time for spring and real racing is drawing closer, and Shangri-La II Motor Speedway will be ready.

In recent weeks, Shangri-La II and sister track Skyview Drags have participated in both Southern Tier Speed World at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City and the Motorsports Expo at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

At Johnson City, the Schneider family's ASA late model and one of the potent Zacharias No. 71 modifieds were featured in the Concrete Castle's booth, while at Syracuse Bryan Sherwood's sportsman modified was the centerpiece of the exhibit. At both shows, hundreds of fans picked up schedules for the 2011 season.

The third season of competition at the Concrete Castle opens Sunday, May 15 with the return of the ROC'n Concrete Rumble for the Race of Champions Modified Series. Last year Chuck Hossfeld made a dramatic late-race pass of Pete Brittain in turn one to win before the largest crowd in Shangri-La II history.

Hossfeld is expected back to defend his victory along with the rest of the RoC stars in the 100-lap main event on May 15. The date falls in the middle of a month-long break in the NASCAR tour schedule, so some of New England's top modified names may choose to make the trek to the Southern Tier. All the track's regular divisions will be in action on May 15, with race time at 1:00 p.m.

jimz1Jimmy Zacharias had the kind of year at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway in 2010 that most drivers can only dream about. He won both the Modified and Sportsman Modified championships, clinching both before the final scheduled race.

In the Modifieds, he won five races and claimed the title by 36 points over Jim Storace. In the Sportsman, he took four regular season features to score a 96 point margin over JR Kent. He is the sixth member of his family to win a championship at a track called Shangri-La, following in the footsteps of grandfather Jim and uncles Rick, Bill, Chris, and RJ. Jimmy's brother TJ was a contender as well in 2010, finishing in the top six in both open wheel classes.

The total number of championships won by the Zacharias family at the Shangri-La tracks, old and new, is nearly two dozen. Of course, the family helped keep the original track alive during its final seasons by promoting it under the Tioga Motorsports Park banner.

Jimmy's father Terry had a solid driving career at the original Shangri-La, but never won a championship. He's been the force behind many of those titles as car owner and crew chief, however, including both of Jimmy's in 2010.

travis_fisher1Three of the four weekly division titles at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway were locked up, practically if not mathematically, before the final point race of the season. Not so the ASA Late Models, where the championship battle went down to the last lap of the last race before Travis Fisher of Fern Glen, Pa. edged out defending champion Jim Lamoreaux by the slimmest margin possible, just two points. It was so close that race director Jason Waibel rechecked his arithmetic before making the call.

Fisher, whose father Larry was a late model contender in the inaugural year of the Concrete Castle but raced only once this season, benefited from the presence of Brad Smales as crew chief. Long time fans will recall Smales as the 1984 late model champion at the original Shangri-La Speedway, and real old timers will remember the potent No. 41 modifieds fielded by Brad's father Cal Smales from his South Montrose shop in the 1970's. Brad later made a name for himself as a top competitor at the Jennerstown Speedway in western Pennsylvania, running against nationally-known late model stars like Steve Peles and Glenn Gault every week.
