The final tune-up for the Race of Champions Modified Tour before the Sunoco 200 at the 61st Race of Champions at the Oswego Speedway is this Saturday night, July 9th as the RoC-N-Concrete Rumble Returns to Shangri-La II Motorspeedway in Tioga Center, New York.

"This should be our fourth RoC Modified event at Shangri-La II" said track manager, Amy Stilson. "We ran our first RoC race in May of 2010, but Mother Nature has played a role in canceling the races last fall and this spring. We want to see the Modifieds run 100 laps under the lights just as much as the fans want to see them". In that one and only RoC event run last May 16th, Chuck Hossfeld took home the win over Wilbur Hebing, Daren Scherer, Pete Brittan and Erik Rudolph. Hossfeld has had the "Hot Shoe" this year on the RoC Modified Tour collecting three wins in the four events run- winning at Oswego, Airborne and Spencer Speedways. Matt Hirschman was the winner at Dunn Tire Raceway Park. Hossfeld will have his hands full at Shangri-La II with 2010 Shangri-La II Modified champion, Jimmy Zacharias in the field. Zacharias currently holds the top spot for Modified wins at "The Concrete Castle" with six wins. Earl Paules, John Markovic and Rick Zacharias are all tied with three wins each at the facility. The speedway has held two 100 lap modified features in its brief history, both run in 2009. They were day time races with Earl Paules winning on July 19th and Jimmy Zacharias winning on September 6th. With the race being run at night, the speed records are sure to fall as well. J.R. Kent currently holds the fastest lap at the high banked concrete half mile with a lap run on September 11, 2010 at 17.320 seconds, 103.926 mph. The 50/50 will start off with the $ 1,003.00 from the unclaimed first race 50/50 being added to the pot.

The show will be a huge event with the ASA Latemodels, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Speed STR's all-seeing action. The ASA Latemodels running a 30 lap feature, the Sportsman and Street Stocks running 25 laps and the Speed STR's scheduled to run 20 laps.

Pit Gates open at 3:30pm, Grandstand Gates open and practice begins at 5:30 pm and racing gets the green flag at 7:00 pm.

Remember - There is always plenty of free camping.

hoosier_daddy_night_2011Thursday June 16th,Hoosier Tire East will present "Hoosier Daddy night" featuring RoC Qualifiers for the Sportsman Modifieds and Street Stocks. On the line are guaranteed starting spots for the respective events at the 61st annual Sunoco Race of Champions weekend at the Oswego Speedway on July 22nd – 24th. The Sportsman Modifieds and Street Stocks run their RoC events on Sunday July 24th.

Jimmy Zacharias is the defending Shangri-La II Motorspeedway champion in the Sportsman Modifieds, and knows his way to victory lane very well. Zacharias leads the All Time Wins list in the Sportsman division with 7 wins in the first two seasons in Shangri-La II history. His closest challenger is Tony Hanbury with 4 wins. Second year driver, Bryan Sherwood is also no stranger to victory lane as he collected 3 wins in his rookie season. You also can not count out T-J Zacharias who picked up his first ever win this past Sunday. Jimmy Zacharias also holds the Fastest Lap record in Sportsman Modified competition with a lap last September 4th of 18.076 seconds, 99.580 mph.

When you think Street Stocks at Shangri-La II, the name Lee Sharpsteen is immediately thought of. Sharpsteen collected the track championship last season, and took a huge first step toward defending the title by edging out his brother Gil on Sunday afternoon for the win. Like Zacharias, Sharpsteen also holds the All Time Wins lead for Street Stocks at the track with 8 wins. Lee Sharpsteen has a fast car, no doubt, but Cricket Clonch is always near the front and holds the track record speed in a Street Stock with a lap timed at 20.746 seconds, 86.764 seconds on August14, 2010.

The Street Stocks will run a 100 lap feature, while the Sportsman Modifieds will compete for 50 laps. There will also be a set of Hoosier Race Tires given away in both divisions courtesy of Frenches Auto Parts – the official tire supplier to Shangri-La II Motorspeedway.

Make sure to bring your wristbands from Sunday to receive $2.00 off the admission price. For Thursday night, June 16th, the Pit Gate will open at 4:30 pm, Grand Stand Gate opens and practice begins at 5:30 pm. Racing gets underway at 7:00 pm.

Just a reminder that there is no racing scheduled for Saturday night June 18th due to the running of an IHRA National event at Skyview Drags. The next event on the schedule is Crazy George's Concrete Craziness featuring "Cone races" for all divisions on Saturday night June 25th.

Four in a row!!! Enough is enough, is the phrase being heard around the "Concrete Castle". With race teams coming into the pits, and fans beginning to come through the gates, everyone braced themselves for a 45 minute deluge of rain, thunder, lightning and high wind. Once the storm passed, the sun tried to break through the clouds, and the track began to dry nicely. There were a few spots where the ground water was weeping across the track, but wait a minute – hold the happiness. Here came more light sprinkles of rain. The drivers were asked to go to the tech barn to meet with the track and decide what to do. The drivers gave some ideas, but Mother Nature had ideas of her own as another downpour forced the cancellation of the program. "We need to get some races in. It's just that simple" said a dejected track manager, Amy Stilson. "We went for it today, and it just didn't work out. We had people coming in, food cooking in the concessions and employees and teams eager to go racing. We are exploring a lot of alternatives right now including running some Sunday shows in addition to the scheduled Saturday races. We might run some double point's shows, double features shows or even run a double feature each for one of the classes on a rotational basis. We are talking with the teams to see what would work out for them before we make any announcements". With the rain out, fans that had paid their admission for Saturday night need to bring their wrist bands back and they will be admitted to Sundays show. The Tobias SpeedSTR's will stick around and be back at the track on Sunday. The Burnin' Rubber Night to benefit Traci's Hope will be re-scheduled to a later date.

pitstopSeveral new concession items will be available at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway in 2011.

Leading the list of new menu selections are Red Osier roast beef sandwiches, a product of the Rochester-area steakhouse well known at stadiums throughout New York State. Corn dogs and pulled pork also join the menu and all items will be available throughout the Saturday night racing season at the Concrete Castle, which begins May 28.

On the track, opening day, Sunday, May 15, headlines the first race of the 2011 Race of Champions Modified Series, a 100 lap shootout which shapes up as the premier paved track race in the northeast that weekend. The RoC Series features all green flag racing with caution laps not counting, so fans will see all the laps of racing they paid for. Defending winner Chuck Hossfeld and three-time series champion Matt Hirschman lead a talented field into action.

Shangri-La II's regular classes – Sportsman Modifieds, ASA Late Models, and Street Stocks - are on the program as well. One lucky fan will leave with an unprecedented 50-50 jackpot, as last year's RoC 50-50 was never claimed, and its $1,000 plus has been carried over to seed the first 50-50 of the new year.

Pit gates open at 10:00 a.m. on May 15 and grandstand gates at 11:00 a.m. Practice runs from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There are no time trials, so the first heat rolls off the line at 1:00 p.m.

mod_0923Shangri-La II Motor Speedway and the Race of Champions Modified Series open their 2011 schedules together on Sunday afternoon, May 15, with the "Return of the RoC'n Concrete Rumble". Last year the event was the biggest in the short history of the Concrete Castle and this year's renewal should be even more spectacular.

In 2010, the feature distance was 75 green flag laps, and for 2011 that has been boosted to 100 laps. Last year the 50-50 jackpot reached over $1,000 but was unclaimed and carried over to the second RoC event scheduled, which was rained out twice. That stack of cash will be the seed money for the 50-50 on May 15; in other words, the jackpot will be over $1,000 before the first ticket is sold on May 15 and it could double on race day.

The drivers who duelled for the checkered flag in 2010, Pete Brittain, who led most of the way, and eventual winner Chuck Hossfeld, are expected to return along with three-time defending RoC series champion Matt Hirschman and a field that should rival the 30-car turnout from 2010. A free date on the calendars of other modified touring series could bring contenders from New England to challenge the Race of Champions regulars.

mod_72_tp_3310"It should be a great way to kick off the 2011 season," said track manager Amy Stilson, who reminded fans that Shangri-La II will race every week on Saturday night from Memorial Day to Labor Day with the exception of June 16, when the weekly program will be on Thursday, and July 22-24, when the track will close in support of the 61st annual Sunoco Race of Champions at Oswego Speedway.

The pit gate opens on May 15 at 10:00 a.m. with grandstands set to open at 11:00 a.m. and racing at 1:00 p.m. The Sportsman Modifieds, ASA Late Models, and Street Stocks are on the program in a preview of their Saturday night attraction as well. Open practice for all classes is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 13-14.
